Joyriding snowmobilers damage school property in Dedham

DEDHAM, Maine — Snowmobilers joyriding after the recent snowstorm apparently damaged school property last week.

Kathy Lawson, principal at the Dedham School, said snowmobile treads tore up the turf on the school’s playground and ball field, causing some sizable ruts in the grass. Lawson said the damage is not so severe that it prevents children at the K-8 school from using the playground and fields before maintenance crews can repair it.

However, the damage was severe enough that a deputy from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department took photos earlier this week to document the incident.

This was not the first snowmobile-related damage to the school’s fields, which are apparently a popular spot for some local riders. A metal bleacher was damaged during a past winter by what school officials believe was a snowmobile.
