HERMON, Maine — Wreaths Across America will begin its annual procession to Arlington National Cemetery on Sunday morning with a ceremony at Hermon Elementary School.
During the ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m., U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud will honor a group of Gold Star Mothers who will be among the guests of honor at the event.
Other dignitaries expected to attend include Cheryl Lare of the Maine Troop Greeters and Lt. Col. Blair Tinkham of the Maine Army National Guard.
The event will begin with a presentation of the colors by members of the Hermon High School JROTC, a flag raising and the national anthem by Hermon American Legion members, Boy Scouts and elementary school students, and the arrival of the convoy of wreaths.
The event then will move into the gym where the program will continue with remarks and a recap of the history of Wreaths Across America by Morrill Worcester, who began decorating veterans graves in 1992.
The ceremony will conclude with the laying of a large wreath honoring Hermon veterans on the memorial at the Hermon Veterans Memorial Park. Afterward, people from the area will be invited to help lay wreaths at Hermon cemeteries.
