Christmas season brings credit card problems, state warns

GARDINER, Maine — Maine consumer protection officials say Christmas shopping season is also high time for credit and debit card problems, from unauthorized charges to overcharges and identity theft.

Commissioner Anne Head of the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation says some consumers are also unaware of fees and limitations associated with many bank and gift cards.

Head says consumers can protect themselves by saving receipts and checking their monthly statements carefully in case there are overcharges, unauthorized purchases or unauthorized debit withdrawals. Financial institutions should be notified promptly if there’s a problem.

Consumers should know whether their gift cards have fees and other terms that can reduce their value.
