Leonardi, McClintock earn spots in Foot Locker Cross Country nationals

KINGS PARK, N.Y. — Abbey Leonardi of Kennebunkport and Matthew McClintock of Athens earned berths in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships nationals based on their top-10 finishes in Saturday’s Northeast Regional.

The Foot Locker competition is for high school-age runners.

The national championship races are Dec.10 at Morley Field, Balboa Park, in San Diego.

Leonardi, a senior at Kennebunk High School who won her fourth straight state Class A schoolgirl championship this fall, finished as runner-up in the Foot Locker girls division for the third consecutive year. She was running with Angel Piccirillo of Homer City, Pa., until Piccirillo sprinted away in the last 50 meters to win by four seconds over the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course.

Piccirillo and Leonardi had moved into the lead together about two miles into the race.

Piccirillo posted a time of 18 minutes, 1 second, while Leonardi posted an 18:05. Catarina Rocha of Peabody, Mass., took third in 18:19.

McClintock, a senior at Madison Area High School, came in sixth in the boys division in 15:51. McClintock was the 2011 Class C boys individual state cross country champ.

Edward Cheserek of Newark, N.J., a junior, posted a record time of 15:20 for the 5K race, 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Daniel Lennon of Morrisonville, N.Y. Finishers two through eight clocked in within 10 seconds of each other.
