Police: RI man held in dad’s Thanksgiving slaying

By LAURA CRIMALDI, The Associated Press

SCITUATE, R.I. — A Rhode Island man accused of fatally beating his father with a wooden baseball bat on Thanksgiving after quarreling the night before has a history of mental illness.

Court records show 27-year-old Paul Dunbar, of Scituate, has “very significant mental health issues.” Dunbar is charged with murder after police say his father, 71-year-old Milo Dunbar, died from head injuries sustained during a baseball bat attack.

Police chief Col. David Randall says it is unknown what transpired immediately before Thursday’s assault. Paul Dunbar’s case file in Kent County District Court says he “hit father with baseball bat over turkey carving.”

Randall did not immediately return a message Friday afternoon about the account in the court file.

Dunbar has been referred to the public defender’s office. He is being held without bail.
