Santa’s Helper Fund gets boost from matching grant

BANGOR, Maine — The Salvation Army’s Santa’s Helper Fund got off to a cheery start this holiday season when Bangor Savings Bank announced that it will match the first $25 of each donation to the fund, up to $25,000.

“It takes a lot for people in Maine to ask for help. When they do, we do what we can to be there,” said Jim Conlon, president and CEO of Bangor Savings Bank. “That’s why we support initiatives like the Santa’s Helper Fund. We’re honored to work with the Bangor Daily News and The Salvation Army to provide this level of attention and assistance to address basic needs this holiday season.”

Reaching the $50,000 goal for the fund depends on the “elf” in everyone lending a hand to the effort, which will aid the Salvation Army’s work in the community, especially at holiday time when family budgets may not stretch far enough to provide gifts, a special meal, warm clothing and other things that make a holiday special. The fund also supports the Salvation Army’s work year-round, including providing meals at the Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, sending a child to Camp Sebago or heating assistance.

In 2010, donations amounted to $55,998.33, which went directly to the Salvation Army. As a result, more than 400 families received help to provide toys, clothing and food for Christmas for their loved ones.

The “good angel” in everyone can find expression by making a contribution to the fund to honor the memory of a loved one or even a special pet. Gifts may be made individually, as a family, through club and business projects, or made anonymously. Donations will be listed in the Bangor Daily News. The BDN has sponsored the Santa’s Helper Fund since 1973, raising nearly $900,000.
