Forum to focus on influx of bath salts in Hancock County

Bucksport Bay Health Communities Coalition and RSU 25 will hold a community forum next Thursday to discuss the dangers of the drug known as “bath salts.”

Organizers seek to educate the community about the illegal designer drugs commonly referred to as “bath salts,” which are starting to appear in Hancock County. The forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Bucksport Middle School.

Bath salts can cause paranoia, convulsions and psychotic behavior, with users causing major problems for police as well as hospitals in Bangor and several other Maine towns. Speakers at Thursday’s forum will discuss the physical and emotional effects of bath salts as well as how officials are attempting to contain what has been described as an epidemic in some communities.

Scheduled speakers include Dr. Daniel Reinke, emergency room medical director at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital; Agent Chris Thornton with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency; and Christene Berg, a licensed alcohol and drug counselor.
