BANGOR, Maine — Officer Brian Smith saw a woman on Friday who looked like the person caught on video surveillance cameras during a theft at Walmart earlier this month and stopped her to question her, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Tuesday.

Kelly-Jo Desmond, 31, denied it was her in the videos but “made comments that she might be involved,” the sergeant said.

She was searched by Smith, who found a container of the synthetic drug bath salts on her, Edwards said.

Desmond was arrested for unlawful possession of synthetic hallucinogenic drugs and taken to Penobscot County Jail. She also was charged with theft.

“It was a pretty good job to recognize someone when just driving by,” Edwards said of Smith.
