STEUBEN, Maine — An accident involving a tractor-trailer truck collision with a car at about 11 a.m. Tuesday on Route 1 resulted in the highway being closed down for about two hours.

According to Sgt. Tim Tabbutt of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Julia Williams, 84, of Richmond, Va., drove out of the Bushey Enterprises parking lot and into the path of the truck. Corey Cowperthwaite, 37, of Corinth was driving the truck east toward Milbridge and could not avoid the Subaru, Tabbutt said.

Williams was heading west on Route 1 but pulled out too far, into the eastbound lane, he said. Tabbutt said driver inattention appeared to be the cause of the collision.

Williams had to be extricated from her car, a 2004 Subaru wagon, and then was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to the deputy. Cowperthwaite was not injured.

A nursing supervisor at the Bangor hospital said Tuesday evening that she had no information on Williams.

Both Williams’ car, and the truck, a 2008 Sterling, were demolished in the collision. The trailer of general cargo that Cowperthwaite was towing to Machias was undamaged.

The highway was closed for two hours, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., while state and local workers cleared the vehicles out of the road and cleaned up debris and spilled automotive fluids.
