ORONO, Maine — An 18-year-old University of Maine student grabbed beer out of the cooler at Orono Thriftway Food Center Monday night and headed to the counter to pay for it, breaking the law with every step, Orono police Capt. Josh Ewing said Tuesday.

The store clerk asked Nichalaus Dingley of Lisbon for his identification, which he provided, then told him he was not old enough to purchase alcohol. The clerk then called police at around 10:15 p.m.

Dingley took off before officers arrived but was located on campus a short time later and charged with illegal possession of liquor by a minor, Ewing said.

“He brought alcohol to the counter” and therefore broke the law, he said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
