Fire set in Vassalboro school bathroom

By Dawn Gagnon, BDN Staff

VASSALBORO, Maine — An investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office said a fire Monday afternoon at Vassalboro Consolidated School was intentionally set.

The fire began about 1 p.m. in a girls bathroom on the second floor of the school, which houses kindergarten through grade eight, Sgt. Kenneth Grimes said late Monday afternoon.

The school was evacuated and because the fire happened so late in the school day, students were sent home early, he said.

Grimes declined to say what was used to start the fire but did note that it had resulted in damage to the walls and ceiling.

Investigators still were working Monday evening to determine who set the fire, which remains under investigation, he said.
