MONSON, Maine — In order to meet the requests of parents to house all boarding students on campus, Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft is looking to construct a new dormitory. Head of School Arnold Shorey provided an update on the dorm plans to the RSU 68 School Board during a meeting Nov. 9 at the Monson Community Center.

“We learned through our latest admission cycle our boarding students are sort of demanding to live on campus,” Shorey said. “So the trustees are looking into the possibility of another dormitory.”

He said other town academies that also offer boarding programs have indicated a trend of students’ families wanting them to reside on campus with other pupils instead of elsewhere in the community such as with host parents.

Shorey said Dean of Boarding and Admissions Chris McGary has been told by parents of prospective students that they want their children to live in a dormitory or else they will not enroll at the school.

“When they see the dormitory they say that’s where they want them to be,” he said.

“We can do this through tuition and through money we are now paying host families and rentals,” Shorey added. “It is very, very important to know there would be no tax dollars going toward this.”

Shorey said the planned dorm would house 34 students. Currently about 25 students reside in either two rental properties or with 10 host parents. The building would be located behind the grove of red pines, which Shorey said would remain in place.

He said plans for a new dorm would have to pass inspection by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Shorey said the trustees are currently working on architectural and feasibility studies, and if all aspects of the dorm follow schedule the building could open next August or January.

“It is not about increasing our boarding population whatsoever; it is about maintaining our current boarding enrollment,” Shorey said, noting the current dorm has just over 50 students.
