Maine lawmaker seeks more funding in child porn cases

PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine state senator is proposing legislation seeking funding to cut a backlog of child-pornography evidence that needs to be investigated.

Sen. Bill Diamond says his legislation would give the Maine State Police’s Computer Crimes Unit more funding going forward.

The Portland Press Herald says hundreds of digital storage devices with thousands of images of child pornography now sit in a Maine State Police storage closet because there’s not enough staffing to process the evidence.

Diamond says clearing cases with children being sexually abused on video should be a top priority. He says the Computer Crime Unit now has a two-year backlog.
