MAINE vs. UMASS

Time, site: 7 p.m. Friday, Mullins Center, Amherst, Mass.

Records: Maine 3-6-1 (3-5 Hockey East), UMass 4-4-2 (2-4-2 HE)

Series, last meeting: Maine leads 41-16-6, 4-4 tie (OT) on 3/5/2011

Key players: Maine — C Brian Flynn (4 goals, 10 assists), LW Spencer Abbott (5 & 7), RW Joey Diamond (6 & 4), D Will O’Neill (1 & 6), D-RW Matt Mangene (1 & 5), G Dan Sullivan (2-3-1, 3.26 goals-against average, .875 save percentage), G Martin Ouellette (1-3, 3.31, .873); UMass — LW T.J. Syner (5 & 10), RW Conor Sheary (4 & 9), LW Michael Pereira (7 & 5), RW Danny Hobbs (3 & 4), D Mike Marcou (2 & 5), D Adam Phillips (1 & 5), G Kevin Boyle (3-2-2, 3.20, .883)

Outlook: The teams are coming into this game on streaks. UMass has won three straight after a 1-4-2 start while Maine has lost four in a row after a 3-2-1 beginning. The rink is 10 feet wider than Maine’s Alfond Arena so it will be of the utmost importance for Maine to stay between the face-off dots in the defensive zone to prevent UMass from getting to the front of the net. The Minutemen returned nine of their top 10 scorers off last year’s 6-23-6 team that scored just 2.48 goals per game. Maine also must keep a tight gap between the forwards and the defense to handle UMass’ quickness. Flynn and O’Neill have put up impressive numbers against the Minutemen as Flynn has 8 & 4 in nine games while O’Neill has 4 & 5 in eight games.
