ALBERTA ‘TUNNY’ HAINES

BAILEYVILLE – Alberta Alice "Tunny" Haines, 91, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at Atlantic Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Calais. Alberta was born March 13, 1920, in Baileyville, daughter of the late Murry and Alice (Lakin) Haynes.

After graduating from Woodland High School, she furthered her education at Farmington Normal School, and also received her master’s degree in education at the University of Maine, Orono. She served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then Tunny taught school in Venezuela for three years until relocating to Connecticut, from where she retired. After retiring she moved back to Woodland to take care of her mother and taught school in Calais. Tunny was an avid traveler, visiting 52 countries, as well as traveling throughout the U.S. She was a member of People’s United Methodist Church, Baileyville.

In addition to her parents, Alberta was predeceased by two sisters, Annie and Gertrude; two brothers, Edwin and Irvin; and a nephew, Forest Woodruff Sr. Surviving are her nephew, Dennis Woodruff of Baileyville; great-nephews, Forest Woodruff Jr. and his partner, Dave Higgins, of Grand Lake Stream, Craig Woodruff of Princeton, and Dennis Woodruff II and his wife, Char, of Big Lake Township; great-nieces, Dorie Dunton and her husband, Smokey, of Newburgh, and Crystal Monk and her husband, Troy, of Baileyville; special friend and caregiver, Lynn Armstrong; and friend, Richard Howe.

Visiting hours will be held noon-2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where a funeral service will begin 2 p.m. Monday. Condolences and memories may be shared at
