SKOWHEGAN, Maine — The winner of the District 5 seat on the Somerset County commissioners’ board is now official.

Andrew Davis of Solon, who lost to Lloyd Trafton of West Forks Plantation by just 24 votes in last week’s election, will not seek a recount.

“I don’t think they’re going to find 24 votes amongst those,” said Davis. “I know my wife has been a vote counter before and I know they’re very accurate. If it had been two or three votes, I would have done it. I don’t think the vote counters would’ve been off by that many.”

Trafton edged Davis 1,073 votes to 1,049. Both were seeking a commissioner’s seat for first time.

District 5 comprises St. Albans, Ripley, Cambridge, Athens, Harmony, Solon, Brighton Plantation, Bingham, Moscow, Caratunk, West Forks Plantation, Jackman, The Forks Plantation and other unorganized townships.

“I’m glad to have the position,” said Trafton. “I’m looking forward to getting down to some work with it.”

Trafton’s first meeting will be on Jan. 4, along with fellow newcomer Robin Frost, who won the District 3 seat in last week’s election.

Davis had until 5 p.m. Wednesday to submit recount papers to the Secretary of State’s Office.

He said he’s not sure if he’ll run for a commissioner’s seat again.

“It’s too early to tell,” said Davis. “There’s always that possibility.”
