Crazy as a coot? Not this bird. But we can’t speak for the hairy woodpecker

By Dave Small, Special to the BDN

Greetings friends.

I thought a bird from earlier this spring (the palm warbler) would brighten today a little. My (to-share-with-friends) file is getting a little out of control, so I’d like to start sending along a few earlier shots that I have not previously shared. Hope you enjoy them.

I’m not sure where the expression “crazy as a coot” came from, but here’s one that I captured at the Essex Street Marsh. It didn’t seem crazy at all. However, this hairy woodpecker did seem a little off his mark!

The marsh always seems to provide some nice surprises. Last week, I was invited to share my photography experience with some students from the University of Maine Honors College. We chose to hike at Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge, and were not disappointed. The day was sunny and warm. We were able to photograph black-bellied plovers, periwinkles leaving trails in the sand and lots of great scenery which would have enticed Ansel Adams.

I’m always grateful to the Maine Coastal Islands for the great protection they provide to these Refuge systems…the critters are there. Thanks.

Take care friends and enjoy our great Maine outdoors.
