UMaine trustees approve Memorial Gym, Field House upgrade

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — University of Maine System trustees have signed off on renovations to the UMaine Field House and Memorial Gym at the state’s flagship university.

Trustees agreed to issue revenue bonds to refinance $30 million of debt due and to provide $7 million for renovations at the gym and field house. Total renovations with a price tag of $14 million will focus on improving access for the disabled and mechanical ventilation and hazardous materials remediation.

Trustees meeting at the University of Southern Maine on Monday were told that the total number of students enrolled in Maine’s public universities now stands at 31,108. Officials say the number of community college transfer students grew 5 percent, helping to keep the overall numbers stable.
