BANGOR, Maine — A 34-year-old Bangor man remains in critical condition Sunday night after being hit by a pickup truck at the intersection of Somerset Street and Broadway late Friday afternoon.
Leon Shtivelman of Essex Street was attempting to cross Broadway on or near the crosswalk near John Bapst High School when he was hit by a 2007 Chevrolet pickup driven by Marvin Vargas Ugalde, 30, of Maiden, N.C., around 4:50 p.m. Friday.
Ugalde, who was driving his work truck and towing a small trailer, was turning right onto Broadway from Somerset.
“There were no witnesses and the visibility was hampered by rain and darkness,” said Bangor police Sgt. James Buckley, who added that alcohol and excessive speed were not factors. “We haven’t determined if there is any fault. The accident is still under investigation.”
The accident shut down Broadway for about a half hour as Shtivelman was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center by Bangor paramedics with apparent head injuries, according to the accident report.
An EMMC spokesperson reported Shtivelman’s condition was critical at 7 p.m. Sunday.
