NJ voters: We want to bet on sports if US says yes

By WAYNE PARRY, The Associated Press

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — New Jersey residents have voted in favor of the legalization of sports betting if a federal ban can be overturned.

The sole statewide question on Tuesday’s ballot asked voters whether New Jersey should pass a state law permitting gambling on football, baseball and other sports. The bets would be taken at Atlantic City casinos, the state’s four racetracks and a former track site in Cherry Hill.

A federal ban on sports betting in all but four states would also have to be repealed before anyone in the Garden State could legally bet on professional, college or amateur sports. Bets would not be allowed on any college sports or athletic events that take place in New Jersey or in which a New Jersey college team is playing.
