Spate of events scheduled for Elvis’ birthday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A gospel concert and a cake-cutting ceremony will highlight the celebration of Elvis Presley’s 77th birthday in Memphis in January.

Elvis Presley Enterprises said Tuesday that the celebration of the late singer’s birthday will run from Jan. 5 through 8.

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Miss., on Jan. 8, 1935, and he moved to Memphis with his parents in 1948. He died in Memphis on Aug. 16, 1977, and next year marks the 35th anniversary of his death.

Birthday events will include a Jan. 7 morning gospel concert featuring former members of J.D. Sumner & The Stamps, who toured with Elvis as his backup singers from 1971 to 1977. Later that evening, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra will present Elvis Birthday Pops.

The birthday cake-cutting on Jan. 8 at Graceland includes a proclamation of Elvis Presley Day by local officials.
