PALERMO, Maine — Police arrested a local man who allegedly hurt his wife Sunday afternoon and also threatened to kill her horse.

Herbert J. Ashby, Jr., 61, of China reportedly chased after his wife, who was riding a horse in a Palermo field, with his pickup truck, according to a report from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said the man allegedly drove across the field to confront his wife about his suspicions that she was cheating on him with her horse riding companion.

“It became confrontational,” Trafton said Monday.

Ashby allegedly grabbed her phone and also struck her in the stomach during the struggle, police said. He also made a threat that he was going to go back home and kill the horse, the woman told police later.

The woman did call 911 to report the incident. Although responding police found that Ashby was no longer in the field, they did locate him. He told a different version of what had happened but did cooperate with officers who arrested him and took him to Waldo County Jail in Belfast to be booked.

The woman did not need medical assistance, Trafton said.

Ashby was charged with obstructing the report of a crime, domestic terrorizing and domestic violence assault.
