ISLAND FALLS, Maine — An Island Falls man is facing multiple charges on Wednesday after allegedly committing a number of offenses in the community.

State Police Sgt. Brian Harris said Thursday that Gary Rushto Jr., 43, was arrested after an incident that reportedly took place in the early morning hours.

According to Harris, Troopers Carman Lilley and Jill Monahan were called to Island Falls to investigate a complaint that two homes had been burglarized and that a suspect was still in the garage at the second house.

Police arrived in the area but did not find anyone in the garage. Harris did not reveal what led police to Rushto’s home a short distance from the scene. But a vehicle that had been reported stolen earlier in the evening from a local business in Houlton was found hidden behind Rushto’s house, Harris said.

Rushto subsequently was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal trespass, theft of a motor vehicle, operating after revocation and possession of marijuana.

He remains at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.

Harris said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges could be filed.
