BANCROFT, Maine — A local man was killed early Thursday morning after a single-car crash in this southern Aroostook community.

State Police Sgt. Tom Pelletier said Thursday evening that the crash that killed 56-year-old Wilfred Hannington happened on the Bancroft Road.

Hannington was westbound on the roadway in his 2003 Dodge truck sometime in the early morning hours when he lost control of the vehicle and it left the roadway. Hannington, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the truck as it struck a ditch and rolled over. He received serious head trauma and died at the scene, according to Pelletier.

A passing motorist discovered the crash at 7 a.m.

Danforth Fire and Rescue units and Down East EMS ambulance service responded to the accident report.

The vehicle, which was owned by Harvey Hannington of Danforth, had extensive damage and is considered a total loss, Pelletier said.

The crash remains under investigation.
