BANGOR, Maine — Officer Chris Blanchard was conducting a Monday night probation check on a transient who is barred by the court from drinking and was attacked by the man’s girlfriend when taking the man to his police cruiser, Sgt. Ed Potter said Wednesday.

Ashley McDonald, 20, who also is listed as a transient, “ran at the officer swinging her fists” around 5:15 p.m. and ended up punching Blanchard in the hands and shoulder and also kicked him when he took her to the ground to place her in handcuffs, the sergeant said.

The assault occurred at the Hope House, a shelter for people struggling with drugs and alcohol.

Blanchard’s hand was injured and required treatment, Potter said.

McDonald was charged with assault and her boyfriend, Thomas Crim, 22, was found in violation of his probation and was arrested, the sergeant said. Both were taken to Penobscot County Jail. McDonald was released at court on Wednesday and Crim remained in jail Wednesday evening, a jail official said.
