THORNDIKE, Maine — A local man has been accused of stealing a checkbook from his children’s grandparents and successfully cashing several checks around Waldo County, police say.

Ishmael Berry, 29, of the Files Hill Road in Thorndike, had gone to visit his children at their grandparents’ home when he allegedly stole the checkbook. Although the couple whose names were on the bank account initially thought the checks were just missing, they learned they were stolen and reported the matter to the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton.

When Berry went to Wentworth Family Grocery in Northport to cash a check in late October, his luck ran out, Trafton said.

“The checks weren’t in his name, and the store owners are local folks. They figured it out,” he said Tuesday.

Police arrested and charged Berry on Friday, Oct. 28, with five counts of forgery, one count of theft, one count of falsifying physical evidence and one count of operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
