BREWER, Maine — A 20-year-old Bangor woman who apparently fell asleep at the wheel slammed her car into an antique-style light pole on the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge on Wednesday morning and it ended up teetering on a fence that overlooks the river, Brewer police Cpl. Paul Gauvin said.

“If she kept going it would have been bad,” the corporal said. “The vehicle was up on the fence just before the bridge.”

The woman, who was alone in the Ford Escape, was not injured in the 7 a.m. collision, but the car is a complete loss, Gauvin said. The light pole she hit with her car will cost about $5,000 to replace, he said.

While police were helping the woman, who was not identified because the report was not completed, motorists driving by kept stopping to take photos with their cellphones.

“People were stopping right in the middle of the road,” Gauvin said, adding that he had to tell more than one to get moving.
