PORTLAND, Maine — A request by Northern Utilities Inc. for its first increase in base rates in nearly three decades will be reviewed by Maine utility regulators.

The Public Utilities Commission will hold a hearing Wednesday in Portland on the natural gas transmission company’s proposed $9.3 million rate increase.

The PUC says this is the first base rate case for Northern in 28 years.

The state Office of the Public Advocate is recommending an increase of $7.4 million.
