ORLAND — Those wanting to get some outdoor exercise with a fun group of people this November are welcome to join several November work parties in the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands.
Because of last Sunday’s snow, the Birches Path workday in the Wildlands is rescheduled to 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 5. Volunteers will clear the last half of Birches Path, which connects Mountain View Road with Flying Moose Trail, passing through stands of spruce and birch and over blueberry ledges. They will cut saplings and small trees using loppers and handsaws. There may be some earth work. Bring loppers, saw and-or spade. Meet at the Wildlands South Gate on Route One (just south of the Route 176 intersection). For more info, call Scott at 825-4709, or email@example.com.
At 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, meet at the Wildlands South Gate for the annual Culvert Cleaning Party. Volunteers will drive and hike Wildlands roads and check our culverts before winter. Dress warmly, wear boots and work gloves, and bring a shovel, hoe or rake and something to drink. Let Tricia know you’re coming at 899-5515 or firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
At 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, will be a Wildlife Brushpile Workday. Volujnteers will be building at least one brush pile in the Wildlands using plans from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. These 12-foot-diameter piles can shelter many small mammals and birds year-round. Meet at the South Gate on Route 1 and bring handsaws, loppers and gloves. Sign up ahead of time with Tricia at 899-5515 or e-mail email@example.com.
Volunteers will also be needed to help with the annual Christmas Greens Gathering, at noon-3 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 27 and Dec. 4. Needed are a tractor driver and tractor, people to help cut trees, serve refreshments, park cars and tend bonfires. To help, call Cheri at 469-2008 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. All events are sponsored by Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust.
