ORRINGTON – Gilbert W. Betts, 85, husband of Charlotte E. (Quimby) Betts, passed away Oct. 29, 2011, at home. He was born May 13, 1926, in Orrington, son of Rex M. and Merle C. (Whitney) Betts.

Gilbert attended Brewer High School. He joined the Navy in 1944 and served on the USS Rutland through May 1946. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Ribbon, two Asiatic-Pacific Ribbons and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was a loyal member of Maurice W. Miles Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4527, Orrington, where he held many post positions, including commander. He was a lifelong resident of Orrington. He worked for 42 years at Eastern Fine Paper Co., Brewer. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and woodsman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Patricia Betts-Levine and her husband, Don Levine, of Rochester, N.H., Cheryl Allen and her husband, Wayne Allen, and David Betts and his wife, Annette Betts, all of Orrington; seven grandchildren, Trevor Betts-Levine and his wife, Cassandra, Derek Betts-Levine and his wife, Katie, Patrick Allen and his wife, Michelle, Crystal Hafford and her husband, Evan, Amy Murray and her husband, Jerrad, Daniel Betts and his wife, Twila, and Dylan Betts; and nine great-grandchildren.

At Gilbert’s request, there will be no formal funeral ceremony, however, a graveside memorial will be held in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
