Three years on, the annual Bangor Comedy Riot is all grown up. Especially considering the fact that last year’s event was such an unqualified success — a sellout crowd of 600 packed Jeff’s Catering in Brewer. This year’s riot, with two shows set for 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, again at Jeff’s Catering, hopes to pack twice as many people into the space for one big night of Maine-made comedy.

Bangor comedian Adam Hatch, along with fellow organizers and comedians Jeremy White and Eric Gundersen, knew they had to build upon the success of the 2010 riot.

“We’ve got to keep it fresh and add new stuff every year,” said Hatch. “The whole idea is to shine the spotlight on all the really funny people from this area who don’t get recognized enough.”

This year’s lineup includes host Tuck Tucker, a Portland-based comic; comedian Mike Sylvester, a Lewiston native and a regular at the Comedy Connection in Portland; and Bangor area comic Ryan Waning, also a familiar face at the Comedy Connection, who performs across New England. Bangor’s own improv comedy troupe, the Focus Group, will give a special performance during the show, and headliner Johnny Ater, a Portland comic who has opened for Maine favorites Bob Marley and George Hamm, will close out the night.

“Johnny is a hilarious guy, and he does some pretty amazing physical humor,” said Hatch. “He’s a new face for us, and I think the crowd is going to love him.”

If this year’s riot is as much of a success as last year’s, Hatch and company hope to offer up a second event sometime in the next six months.

“I’m just really happy to give people an alternative for things to do. We want to keep showcasing all our great local talent, but we also want to try to bring in even bigger names throughout the year,” said Hatch. “I’m really happy to see comedy thriving north of Portland.”

The third annual Bangor Comedy Riot is set for 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer. Tickets are $12 each, or $80 for eight tickets, and can be purchased at Bull Moose Music. There will be a cash bar. For information, call 902-0463.
