ALFRED, Maine — A former Maine redemption center owner has been sentenced to 21 days in jail for illegally redeeming cans and bottle from out of state.

Thomas Woodard, who ran Green Bee Redemption in Kittery, was sentenced Friday in York County Superior Court in Alfred. His attorney tells the Portland Press Herald he will appeal the conviction.

Woodard was convicted in August in the state’s first criminal trial over bottle redemption fraud for passing off no-deposit containers from New Hampshire and Massachusetts as if they were purchased in Maine. His wife was acquitted at the same trial.

Prosecutors said Woodard effectively stole about $10,000 from beverage distributors by accepting more than 100,000 cans and bottles purchased in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
