Northeastern holds off UMaine in women’s hockey

ORONO — The Northeastern Huskies scored on a penalty shot and added two power-play goals as they defeated the University of Maine 3-2 in women’s hockey action Friday afternoon.

Kendall Coyne tallied the penalty-shot goal and pitched in an assist for the Huskies (6-1). Brittany Esposito netted a power-play goal and chipped in an assist, and Colleen Murphy notched the other power-play goal. Casey Pickett and Maggie DiMasi each handed out an assist.

The Black Bears (5-4) were down 3-0 as they entered the third period and cut the lead to one but ultimately couldn’t get the equalizer.

Dawn Sullivan and Brittany Dougherty each buried a goal for Maine, and Danielle Ward dished out an assist.

Florence Schelling made 26 saves on 28 shots for the Huskies and improved to 5-1 for the season. Brittany Ott made 28 saves on 31shots but took the loss, dropping her record to 2-3.
