AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage’s approval rating has increased by 16 percent since this spring, according to a tracking poll released Wednesday, proof that many Mainers support the direction he’s leading the state, his staff said.

The Critical Insights poll conducted Oct. 18-23 asked 600 likely Maine voters a series of questions about LePage, the economy and other political issues, both national and in-state.

The questions mirrored a Critical Insights tracking poll from this spring that showed 31 percent of Mainers approved of LePage. That number is now 47 percent.

“The people of Maine have had an opportunity to experience Governor LePage’s leadership on the economy and budget reform that centers on the governor’s efforts to create more jobs,” said Brent Littlefield, LePage’s senior political adviser. “Governor LePage will continue his tremendous focus on job creation through improving education, reducing energy costs and moving Maine government in the direction of helping, not hindering, job creators.”

Men, less highly educated Mainers and the youngest residents polled were most likely to approve of the job the governor is doing, according to the poll. Conversely, women, college graduates and residents who are 35 years old older were more likely to disapprove. The poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 4 percent.

“It’s no surprise that Governor LePage’s approval ratings have gone up since the spring,” said Ben Grant, chairman of the Maine Democratic Party. “We aren’t in session, so people aren’t reminded of how bad his policies are for Maine. The moment we’re back in session and the impact of his policies are being felt his number will go down again.”

But Littlefield said he has seen other polling data that put the governor’s approval rating above 50 percent and pointed out that Portland-based Critical Insights is widely thought of as a Democratic-leaning pollster.

“The Critical Insights numbers only confirm a trend of positive approval numbers for the governor,” he said. “Maine people realize that having a successful businessman as governor, someone who has actually created jobs sitting in the governor’s chair, provides the people of Maine their best shot at improving the state’s economy.”

President Barack Obama did not fare as well among Mainers in the recent poll.

His favorability rating of 43 percent was the lowest it has been during his presidency and well below the national average of 54 percent. On economic issues, only 36 percent of those polled had a positive view of how the president is handling the economy while 54 percent disapproved.

The poll also asked Mainers about the biggest concerns they face. Forty-four percent said unemployment, 35 percent said the economy. Other answers included taxation, education and health care, but none of those answers received more than 10 percent.

When asked to provide specific fears about the economy, the most common answers were job loss, cost-of-living increases and increasing gas prices. Only one in 10 felt the economy has improved in the last 12 months while 47 percent said it’s doing worse.

Grant said the poll results on economic issues don’t seem to match up with the support shown for LePage.

“LePage and Republicans ran on a platform of jobs,” he said. “Jobs, jobs, jobs, that’s all they ever talked about, yet the polls shows that more Mainers are worried about the unemployment now than they have been since 2000.”

Finally, the Critical Insights poll took Mainers’ temperature on a pair of November ballot questions.

On Question 1, which asks voters whether they want to reject a new law that eliminates Election Day registration, 51 percent supported a veto while 43 percent said they wanted to keep the new law in place.

Mark Gray, manager of the Yes on 1 campaign, said the poll was good news.

“Throughout this campaign, we’ve heard from Mainers that Election Day registration works,” he said.

On Question 4, which asks voter to support or reject a constitutional amendment that updates the congressional and legislative redistricting process, voters were less committal. Thirty-three percent said they planned to vote no, 32 percent said they would vote yes and 35 percent didn’t know.

Critical Insights says 47 percent of those polled approve of the job LePage is doing, compared to 31 percent last spring.

    Maybe Roxanne was right!

    Mainers  aren’t very bright!

I think those disapproval numbers will increase when people read today’s unemployment/local control article.

Not at first, but they are getting smarter.

probably -  and validating Roxanne’s observation about Maine being a welfare state.

It’s amazing what happens when democrat lies are silenced!

Out of a population of 1,318,301 …..600 of anything is a mere drop in the bucket and probably not so indicative of his true popularity or lack there-of.

ok then using your logic what do you think of the Yes on 1 results?

    Go, Paul LePage!

You don’t need a special license to see this is great Maine art.  And the State of Maine paid NOTHING for this FANTASTIC Governor’s portrait.  This is MY portrait of Paul LePage – Governor of Maine.  I painted this portrait months ago.  Paul LePage is MY GOVERNOR!

This 30×40 inch portrait of PAUL is currently hanging in the Frost Memorial Library in Limestone.  COME SEE IT!  http://ping.fm/3etqD

No Surprise. Good job gov. That is why I voted for you (psssssss. contributed too)

A “national average of 54 percent” approval for Obama? Really? What polls are the Bangor Daily News reading? I haven’t seen an approval rating anywhere near that for him in well over a year. I think they reversed their numbers on this one.

  • Anonymous

This is hilarious; it appears the only people that don’t approve of Mr. LePage are the ones who post here… 47% wow…

Hey Bangor Daily News.  I noticed you deleted about 40 comments on this article.  One of them mine.  I had no profanity or ignorance in my post just opinion.  You’re just a rag for the new governor who by the way is a snake and a disgusting person.  I canceled my paper route today because of this.  News media outlets are choosing sides now instead of reporting.  And you are one of them.  Buh bye.

I agree, he must be doing something right….. I wonder where Larry from Brewer is…He luvs the Guv….

I just discovered that this same article is posted online at a different url, below.  Very odd!  I think the missing comments you mentioned might be here.

Mainers approve of Liepage outsourcing jobs, Maine loggers approve of Liepage allowing Canadian loggers to come over and cut the throats of the American loggers? This poll is probably another lie.. They meaning Mainers cant approve of the way he has handled unions, teachers firefighters and police officers pensions.. Jobs he has cut. Mainers approve of this? I hardly think so.. This poll was probably conducted by the republicans and only asking republicans or only tallying the people that voted for him.. Cause everybody i know have certain names for him and do not approve of the way he does business..

Guess it depends on who you ask.

Nobody I know thinks LePage is doing a good job.

Nope.  Deleted.  Actually there were almost 150 comments on that one article and 90% of the liberal and independent voices were removed.  REMOVED by the Bangor Daily staff.  This is very much a Republican bought and paid for propaganda machine since the republicans invaded Maine during the last election and bought everything worth buying politically.  Open your eyes Maine.   King LePage is ruling this state.

  • Anonymous

Yeah they do.  I support the freedom to say what you wish as long as you aren’t attacking people personally but this site chooses to silence whatever they wish regardless.  They have a hidden agenda just like a lot of the other news sites on the net right now.

I wonder who the BDN was protecting when they removed my post?  I didn’t say anything negative about one of their advertisers, so it wasn’t greed.   Who knows.  The BDN is in the pocket of certain groups, and if you say anything about them, you and/or your posts go away.

Contrary to what the socialists think, read their posts, the people cannot be wrong on this one.LePage is the right man at the right time.

It’s amazing how keeping one’s mouth from forming words that are offensive can improve how one is viewed?

  • Anonymous

Even a blind man can see that Governor LePage is doing exactly what we need to get this state back on track. Yes he does not beat around the bush and he is sometimes very blunt, but he is doing what we need to get business to come back to Maine, That means jobs for the people that really want to work. And maybe even some jobs for those  that don’t really want to work.

  • Anonymous

I am neither young, nor less highly educated and I DO approve of the job the Governor is doing.

How any thinking person can approve of this jerk is beyond me.

On the other hand, there’s a noticeable shortage of thinking people these days, especially in the governor’s office.

you left out all his chins in the potrait…you almost make him look human….just doesnt look like him and his evilness, meanness. Glad its way up in Limestone, won’t have a chance of running into it…bad enough to see his puss in the paper and on tv

If the poll had been 5 points lower, Da Guv’s office would have said that they never look at polls(a lie) Polls are only good for the day they are taken. No thoughtful person thinks Lepage is doing anything at all. TALK TALK TALK. Talk is cheap. He hasn’t made a fool of himself lately. Give him some time. He will…

Why do highfalutin Democrats (Ben Grant, in this instance) always feel the need to explain to the rank and file what a spike in a Republican’s poll numbers “really mean?”  Just in case we dummies get the mistaken idea that the poll actually means a 16 point hike in Paul Lepage’s approval numbers, Ben Grant immediately gets right on that,  to make sure us rubes don’t interpret that poll ……. in the only way reasonable people would interpret it. It’s like he’s saying, “Now, now folks…don’t be fooled by that poll.” It’s a common strain that runs through the Democrat thinking system…..like Obama blaming his economic woes on “the weather.”  YOU GO GOVERNOR !

  • Anonymous

Even his supporters are starting to miss his “shoot from the hip” remarks. Whatever our initial reaction to some of his faux pas, they were always eclipsed by how outraged his opponents would get by his “not so smooth” comments !  LOL…before  we even had a chance to weigh in on his imprudent remarks, his haters would be up in arms, whooping and hollering and having a meltdown to the point that we just backed away, remained silent and opted for how amusing it is to watch the 61 per centers dive into their usual pandemonium over his remarks!

What hubris. Grant is stating that the only reason LePage’s numbers are better is because he and his fellow conspirators are not there to tear him down day in and day out.

  • Liberal Soup N Crackers

    Non-elites.

  • Liberal Soup N Crackers

That is how Democrat pollsters work.

  • StillRelaxin

The other thing I find funny is the folks who are rejoicing over Mr. LePage’s numbers “supposedly” going from really bad to only kind of bad.  Even with the questionable polling measures used by Critical Insights (Aren’t they the same folks who had LePage up by 20+ points going into the race for governor?  Wow, they were only off by a mile there as well) the best they can say is that 53% of the 600 or so folks they contacted still think he’s a loser.  After a few months of relative calm he’s just started expressing his deeeeep thoughts again in the last week.  We know the pollster’s here have a weak track record.  We won’t know anything for sure until the public turns out to do a little voting in November.  I’m relatively sure Mr. LePage and crew won’t be happy with those “polling” results.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SNAI5PPECHRVYD2WO6S4ADY3MQ wacky macky

I’m sure one of the 53%. He’s dumber than dirt. All he and his fascist legislature has done is legalize explosives (fireworks) when the population is trying to prevent terrorism. What’s wrong with that picture?

LePage has some people working for him that are politically smart.  They have limited press access to the governor.  The message we are now getting out of the Blaine House is a highly controlled and scripted one.  No recent comments about the NAACP or the President.  No comments about his own constituents being “idiots.”  That helps.  We had a mill open up north.    LePage has been holding town meetings (which at least give the appearance of accessibility), and job creation conferences (which give the appearance that he is doing something to create jobs).  LePage has come up with a enemy for us to hate — those evil unemployed.  He been repeatedly railing against them, blaming them for their own lack of employment, which has proved to be politically popular among some.

The poll numbers ARE up — and that is an impressive climb.  Let’s see if they stay up.   Sad but true that it may be possible to gain popularity by soundbites alone.

Speaking of lies, who did LePage say the tax break was for, really?  And if it is really true that we have no rich people in Maine, why are  values of luxury homes increasing while the rest of the market is flat?  And tell us again, why is it he took down that mural?

Should we accept the fact that ALEC (the American Legislative Exchange Council) is spoon-feeding legislation on everything from education to abortion to LePage and his staff? Does anyone believe that canned corporate-sponsored legislation takes the best interests of Maine people into account?

That LePage is on the wrong side of history will become increasingly clear.  History will not be kind to Paul LePage.

47% favorable approval rating on a Republican governor in a liberal state from a democrat leaning pollster might not sound like a good rating to you but its a sweet scent to me. If this governor stays on the ascent with the people of Maine, Democrats will find themselves in deep trouble. So far all the tongue lashing and vilification of the governor doesn’t seems to have had much effect. Not even the outlandish (terroristic?) behavior of the democrat/George Soros/Acorn sponsored Occupy squatters will make any difference. I don’t know about you StillRelaxin, but I’ve earned a living through hard work, not just relaxin’.

  • StillRelaxin

Now that’s an odd story. I stopped reading it this morning because it was making me feel ill. In sum; State Power and control is good and certain communities who won’t play ball are bad and should be punished, we want cheap energy so we should run to Canada and get a “dirty” energy deal (Rather than solve our own problems with clean energy and putting folks to work to do it), unemployed people are bad and poor people are the worst, both need to suffer more because the subsistence living we provide for free is a better option than Mr. LePage’s business buddies will provide for part time or full time employment, and folks could find jobs if only they were getting the right kind of training via a five year H.S. experience. Did I miss anything? Don’t tell me, I’m feeling a bit queasy again.

Wow!  I’ll bet you think the mural was bad art!

Only goes to show that the less Paul says the less folks will find him objectionable. Perhaps if he said nothing for the next three years his rating will go so high that less than 50% will think he’s a loser.

  • StillRelaxin

I smell something but it ain’t so sweet.
    Make hay and rejoice away.
In the end as it’s always been, VOTES will decide the day.
Yes on 1 and the GOP/Tea Party is done. Yea!
If you vote no on 1 then we know what you are, uneducated/gullible or in the percentage of 1.

Are you saying the poll is a farce????

  • Anonymous

I will have to keep an eye out on this…..

I don’t believe these statistics.  I studied statistics and believe me you can make anything look good/bad depending upon how you filter or present the numbers.  For instance, I could say:

“53% of Mainers disapprove of the governor’s job performance.  Though down slightly from previous polls the numbers continue to clearly demonstrate that LePage is an unpopular governor.”

And that is without even looking at how the original stats were manipulated.  First, are 600 samples a significant sample base in a state with around 1.3 million people?  Not if you were looking from a process control environment.  Where were the samples taken and was the sample base diverse?  All from Bangor or Portland or rural, was the sample base normalized, were the samples male/female, republican/democrat, independent, what age group, time of day the sample was taken, employed/unemployed, it just goes on and on.  These numbers do not reflect what is being said on the street, at least not around Bangor.  Consequently I believe this company lacks credibility.  A consultant who opens a company with a well written web page is no a guarantee of the veracity for this poll.
