Electrical fire forces evacuation of Piscataquis County Jail

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — An electrical fire forced an evacuation of inmates at the Piscataquis County Jail late Tuesday afternoon, but things were back to normal shortly thereafter, a county official said Wednesday.

Piscataquis County Communications Director Dave Roberts said an overloaded transformer caused the fire in the jail’s control room, and while there were few flames, there was enough smoke to force the evacuation, he said.

The Dover-Foxcroft Fire Department as well as local police and Piscataquis County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.

The 31 inmates were taken to the jail’s recreational yard. No injuries were reported, and the control room had only minor damage.
