YARMOUTH, Maine — A Yarmouth middle school science and math teacher has won a national award.

Morgan Cuthbert was given a Milken Family Foundation Educator Award at a surprise assembly Monday at Harrison Middle School along with an unrestricted check for $25,000.

Only a few dozen of the awards are given out nationally.

The 35-year-old Cuthbert was honored for his hands-on approach to teaching and his efforts to make lessons relevant for students of all learning abilities.

When students struggle with complicated new concepts, Cuthbert pairs them with classmates who understand the material.

Cuthbert tells The Portland Press Herald he’s not sure what he’ll do with the money — maybe travel some or fix up his home.
