AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine energy officials say the statewide average cash price for No. 2 heating oil has risen by 1 cent per gallon in the past week to $3.51.

The Governor’s Office of Energy Independence and Security conducted its weekly heating fuel survey on Monday.

Office Director Ken Fletcher said China, the world’s largest energy consumer, is fueling some of the rise in crude oil prices. He said there’s very little an individual state with no oil reserves can do in the short term to reduce oil prices.

The energy office said prices vary widely from region to region of the state. The lowest heating oil price in the energy office’s sample was $3.31 per gallon in southwestern Maine, and the highest price of $3.75 as found in the eastern region.
