Massachusetts man in hospital after Limerick crash

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

LIMERICK, Maine — A head-on collision Sunday in York County sent one man to the hospital and charges could be pending, according to police.

Michael Toomey, 24, was driving his 1997 Ford Ranger pickup eastbound on Route 5 when his vehicle collided with a logging truck owned and operated by Dale Metcalf, 48, of Dale Metcalf Logging Co. in Porter, according to Maj. William King with the York County Sheriff’s Department.

King said in a news release that Toomey passed another car on a blind curve, entering the westbound lane, and smashed into the big rig. Toomey had to be extricated from the truck by the Limerick Fire Department with the Jaws of Life. He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries.

Metcalf was not injured.

Route 5 was shut down for six hours while York County deputies reconstructed the crash. Charges are expected to be filed against Toomey, whose condition was unknown Monday.
