PORTLAND, Maine — The effect of the Arab Spring protests that have swept across the Mideast will be the topic of a presentation at the University of New England.
Anthropology Professor Daniel Varisco of Hofstra University will lead Monday’s presentation and a public reception before the talk at the school’s Portland campus.
The political protests started in Yemen last February and have brought the country to the brink of civil war. Protests in one country quickly spread to neighbors, creating a domino effect in nations where power has long been concentrated in the hands of absolute rulers.
The former leaders of Tunisia and Egypt are gone, Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi is dead, Syria’s leader is quashing unrest with bullets and Bahrain’s king has been fending off protests.
