WHITING — The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a blaze Friday morning that heavily damaged a trailer on Route 189, according to the local fire chief.
The fire was reported around 10 a.m. Friday by a Marine Patrol officer who was driving past the 40-foot insulated box trailer, Fire Chief Craig Smith said Sunday. The owner of the trailer, Tracy Winter, had left the trailer shortly before the fire was discovered, Smith said. The property is located on a sharp corner near the intersection of Route 189 and Route 1, he said.
The fire chief said the end of the trailer that had been converted into living space was destroyed by the blaze. The other end had less fire damage but was damaged by smoke and water.
“It’s pretty much totaled,” Smith said.
The trailer was not insured, according to the fire chief.
Smith said that two years ago a fire at the same property that resulted in three outbuildings being destroyed was investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. No charges were ever filed in that case, he said.
Smith said the fire marshal has not yet determined the cause of Friday’s blaze.
“We’re just waiting for the fire marshal’s report to find out what the cause is,” Smith said.
