Veterans’ cemetery restroom, parking project in Caribou progressing

By Barbara Scott, Aroostook Republican & News

CARIBOU, Maine — “If the weather cooperates this job will be completed this fall,” said Harry Hafford, chairperson of the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery Corp. “If not then it will be finished no later than May 15, next year.”

Hafford was referring to a restroom facility being constructed at the cemetery near the columbarium walls.

“This is a much-needed addition to this location,” Hafford said. “We are in hopes that having this facility available will encourage more people to attend our ceremonies or to feel more comfortable about spending time at the resting places of their loved ones.”

The building will house two restrooms and will be open from sunrise to sunset from Memorial Day through Veterans’ Day. Additional parking for those visiting the NMVC also is being created in the same area.

Hafford said the cost of the project is $60,000, and to date all but $3,000 has been raised through fundraisers, donations and in-kind donations.

“John Noble once again donated in-kind services to help make this project possible,” said Hafford.

Doody Enterprises, Inc., general contractors from Woodland, are building the new restroom facilities.
