HUDSON, Maine — Sam Alexander, a 15-year-old golfer who enjoyed playing the game despite losing a leg to cancer, has died.
Alexander, who was recognized as the state’s Junior Golfer of the Year this fall, died at Eastern Maine Medical Center on Thursday.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation had granted Alexander’s wish of a local shopping spree this fall, and he spent a day at numerous local stores at the Bangor Mall.
His day was capped off with dinner at Dysart’s Truck Stop in Hermon, where he enjoyed meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
Alexander had lost his right leg and part of his right shoulder to osteosarcoma. Despite that, he played golf several times a week, according to past BDN stories. Alexander’s father, Joe, is also an avid golfer.
An earlier version of this story contained an error. Sam Alexander died at Eastern Maine Medical Center on Thursday, not on Wednesday.
