PORTLAND, Maine — The scheduled five-night closure of the existing Veterans Memorial Bridge has been delayed by a day because of a shipment of road salt set to arrive at the Sprague Energy Terminal on Friday.

According to a press release, the existing bridge is now set to be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, to Friday, Oct. 28.

The closure was delayed because construction crews will be transporting 40,000 tons of road salt on the existing bridge Friday night through Monday afternoon. Commuters traveling this route can expect up to 25 trucks per hour.

During the bridge closure, commuters are advised to plan ahead and to allow more time for travel. Detour signs and message boards will display the best alternate routes. Drivers are encouraged to consider the following detours:

• Traffic headed northbound on I-295 use Exit 5 to the Fore River Parkway to access the Veteran’s Intersection where US-1 and Valley Street cross.

• Traffic from Main Street in South Portland will get on I-295 North and use Exit 5 to access the Fore River Parkway.

• Traffic headed southbound on I-295 from the Veteran’s Intersection will use Fore River Parkway to access I-295 South.

• Traffic headed to Main Street in South Portland will use Fore River Parkway to I-295 South to get to Exit 4.

Construction of the new bridge is on schedule and expected to open to traffic next summer, with the removal of the old bridge to be completed in December 2012.
