ROCKPORT, Maine — The Camden Hills Regional High School Visual and Performing Arts Department announced that Ian Doran is Student of the Month for October.
Ian is involved in all aspects of music and drama at CHRHS. He is a member of concert band, pep band, chamber singers, chorale and plays one of the lead roles of in the CHRHS November production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera.”
Ian became interested in the arts in fifth grade when, he said, “would find any excuse he could to head to the chorus room.” He also began playing trumpet in fifth grade, switching to French horn in seventh grade and qualifying for the District III Honor Band in middle school.
Ian is described as an outstanding choral musician, having been accepted to the MMEA District III Honor Choir for five years, and the MMEA All State Chorus for the last two years. Ian sang with the men’s a cappella ensemble, The Offbeats, last year and is the group’s leader this year.
In addition to his current theatrical role, Ian has held many lead and supporting lead roles in theater at CHRHS and at Northport Music Theater’s Summer Music Camp. Last year, he entertained audiences as the jester in “Once Upon a Mattress,” and before that as Drake in “Honk!”
Ian’s favorite memories of Northport Music Theater include playing Mark in “Rent: School Edition” and Jack in “Into the Woods.” He hopes to pursue theater as a major in college with his sights set on performing on Broadway one day. Ian recommends that other students consider getting involved in the arts. “You never know what you might enjoy. Just jump right in, you might surprise yourself,” he said.
See Ian and his peers perform in “The Phantom of the Opera” Nov. 10-19 where Ian can be seen playing the Phantom on Nov. 10,12,16 and 18.
