BREWER, Maine — Voters interested in finding out more about the four candidates running for Brewer City Council or the four people running for the school board may attend the Meet the Candidates forum Tuesday night at Brewer High School.

The forum, sponsored by the Brewer Education Association, is being held in the student services room. Doors open for a meet-and-greet with light refreshments at 6:30 p.m., and the forum begins at 7 p.m.

Mayor Joseph Ferris, 67, is running against former council member Manley DeBeck, 64, who served the city for 12 years, homemaker Patricia Preble and Matthew Vachon, 30, a local mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. All said they would attend the forum.

Ferris, a lawyer who runs his own law office, first was elected to the council in 2002 and has served nine consecutive years.

DeBeck, an 18-year Eastern Fine Paper Co. mill worker, is working at Miller’s Workshop work apparel store in Brewer and is involved in the local Kiwanis Club. He lost his fifth consecutive council term during last year’s local election.

This year is Preble’s third attempt to get on the council. She is a homemaker who said she was kicked out of school when she was in the seventh grade.

Vachon is a 1999 Brewer High School graduate and is a freemason and member of the Mason’s Scottish Rite as well as a member of the Anah Temple Shrine.

Four people are running for the two open seats on the Brewer School Committee now held by Chairman Mark Farley and member Calvin Bubar, who has decided not to run.

Farley is running for his seat against Michael Hutchins, a retired teacher who taught at Brewer High School for 25 years, longtime educator Janet McIntosh, who recently retired as principal of Washington Street School, and resident Benjamin Umel, who has children enrolled in Brewer schools.

The city council and school board seats are three-year terms.

Former school board member Mark Chambers is the lone candidate running for a five-year term as a Brewer High School district trustee.
