AUGUSTA, Maine — U.S. senators from Maine and New Hampshire want more information on the status of missiles that were stockpiled by Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi’s regime.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said they’re concerned about the possible compromise of as many as 20,000 anti-aircraft missiles in Libya.

The senators sent a letter sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta on Thursday asking for the number of missing weapons so there can be an accurate assessment of steps that must be taken to protect Americans at home and abroad who rely upon air travel.
