MACHIAS – J. Hartley Crane passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at his home. He was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Machias, son of Roswell L. and Lillian (Harmon) Crane.

He graduated from Machias High School, class of 1934, and was superintendent of Machias Water Co. for many years, retiring in 1980.

He is survived by his wife, Linnie (Griffin) Crane of Machias; one daughter, Joyce Richardson and companion, William Wadsworth, of Marshfield; three grandchildren and their spouses, Scott Richardson and Mary of Bradley, Janet Lewis and Jeffrey of Ellsworth, and Shelby Leighton and Eric of Bucks Harbor; one niece, Sharon Crane of St. Petersburg, Fla.; nephews, Leslie Haynes and wife, Debra, of Machias, and Larry Haynes of Lewiston; and six great-grandchildren, Andrew and Adam Richardson, Darien and Tucker Lewis, and Julia and Cooper Leighton. He was predeceased by his parents; one brother, Clayton and his wife, Rebecca; and two sisters, Phyllis Crane and Dorothy Crane.
