BANGOR, Maine — A man who apparently was stabbed in Bangor was found early Wednesday morning in Newport, according to police, who said they also are investigating the stabbing of another man that occurred overnight in the Queen City.

Both victims were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center and authorities are investigating whether the incidents are connected, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

“This is not some random act of someone going around and stabbing people,” he said Wednesday afternoon.

Edwards said detectives are in the process of “trying to run down tons of information.”

Newport Police Chief Leonard Macdaid said police were called to the Irving gas station at 7:20 a.m. Wednesday and upon arrival they discovered Jonathan Lehman lying in the grass. Macdaid said Lehman had stab wounds to his chest.

Lehman, 22, was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield before being transported to EMMC.

Edwards said police in Newport notified their counterparts in Bangor that the victim reportedly was stabbed in Bangor before being dropped off in Newport.

A woman who was with Lehman, Shauna Smart, 37, of St. Albans, was taken into custody for violating conditions of release and possession of drug paraphernalia, Macdaid said.

Edwards said police received a call at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday from EMMC that a different man may have been stabbed in the Queen City.

The unidentified 27-year-old man reportedly was dropped off at EMMC’s emergency room with injuries that were not life-threatening, Edwards said.

He added that Smart is not considered a suspect in the stabbing of Lehman and detectives have interviewed both victims.

“We’re still gathering a lot of information,” said Edwards, adding that police hope to conclude the investigation within the next couple of days.

A hospital spokesman had no update on Lehman’s condition Wednesday.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7384, and dial ext. 6 to leave an anonymous tip.
