OLD TOWN, Maine — Police went to a Lincoln Street apartment recently after an emergency 911 hangup call and found a woman outside with red marks on her neck who said a man inside had choked her, Old Town police Capt. Kyle Smart said Monday.

The 19-year-old University of Maine student, who is from Freeport, saw the police car arrive around 11:45 p.m. Oct. 1 and told Officer Ryan Fitch, “Thank God you’re here. He tried to kill me,” Smart said, reading from the police report.

The woman said Sean McGrady, 19, who lives at the Lincoln Street apartment, choked her and then threw her against a wall. She called 911, but he got to the phone, the victim said.

After the 911 hangup call, dispatchers called the number back and a man police believe was McGrady told them that “a neighbor’s cat knocked over something and scared him,” Smart said.

While the officer was interviewing the victim, McGrady “was sneaking around the back side of the vehicle trying not to be seen,” Smart said.

Both had been drinking, the woman said. McGrady — who reportedly had a fake identification card from Rhode Island that indicated he was old enough to purchase alcohol — was charged with domestic violence assault, obstructing the report of a crime or injury, furnishing liquor to a minor and possession of a fraudulent driver’s license. He was taken to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.

McGrady was back in jail on Oct. 3 after police did a random search of his apartment and “found a potted marijuana plant, a 3-foot-high bong, marijuana, a marijuana grinder, and a pill container with pills,” Smart said. “Bong” is a slang term for a water pipe.

McGrady was charged with aggravated cultivation of marijuana because his home is within 1,000 feet of a school, unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, sale and use of drug paraphernalia, possession of a usable amount of marijuana, and violating his bail conditions. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
