Maine boats, boat builders theme of conference

SEARSPORT, Maine — The history of Maine boats and boat builders will be the theme of a conference Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22, at Penobscot Marine Museum. Well-known boat builders and historians will give presentations on the development of Maine boat types and the history of famous boatyards and builders.

Speakers scheduled are:

• Jon Johansen, historian and publisher, Maine Coastal News, “The Evolution of the Maine Lobsterboat.”

• David Cockey, president, Museum Small Craft Association, “Results of a Comparative Study of Maine Peapods.”

• Ralph Stanley, boat builder, on Friendship sloops.

• David Andrews, historian, on the Gamage boatyard of South Bristol.

• Walter Ansel, head shipwright, Mystic Seaport,”Rebuilding the Dragger Roann at Newbert and Wallace of Thomaston.”

Additional speakers and topics will be announced.

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, with a screening of the documentary “Maine Built Boats: Art and Soul,” produced and narrated by ESPN commentator Gary Jobson.

Registration for live sessions begins at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. Meals and refreshments are included both days.

Registration for both days is $75, $60 for museum members. Single-day registrations also are available, and discounts are available to students and teachers. Attendees are invited to participate in the annual meeting of the Museum Small Craft Association at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Oct. 19-20, for a single combined registration fee of $130.

Penobscot Marine Museum’s annual History Conference draws amateur historians, professional scholars and others interested in the history of Maine and the Penobscot Bay region. It encourages exploration of the region’s traditions and resources and provides a forum for learning and discussion while promoting broader perspectives and understanding.
